Texarkana, TX (6-2-2008)- New Boston ISD just completed it's first competition in the Bulldog 100, a mini-NASCAR race established in 2005, that took place over the weekend. The Bulldog 100 is a fund raiser for the Rising Star scholarship. This year was another record year for the Bulldog 100 with over $100,000 going to the scholarship.
The Rising Star Scholarship is a full tuition and fee scholarship for academic or vocational classes for the freshman and sophomore years. Applicants must be current high school graduates and have a family taxable income of $75,000 or less. Application deadline is August 1st following high school graduation. First year recipients must maintain full-time status and a minimum GPA of 2.0. Rising Star students who complete their freshman year with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 and full-time status are eligible for second year funding.
The event kicked off Thursday with pit crew competitions and the parade of cars from Central Mall to the race course. Friday was filled with inspections, practice and qualifying races. After the 5K Run/Walk Saturday morning opened the final day of events, the individual cup races, qualifier, consolation and championship shootout races were held. There were three cup races - the Stillwell, the Pinkerton, and the Rising Star.The top five place cars from each cup race proceeded to the shootout, while the rest of the field had a second chance race to qualify.
The New Boston team ran in three heats Friday and qualified for the first race Saturday morning for the Stillwell Cup. New Boston placed fourth in the Stillwell Cup to advance to the Championship Shootout. New Boston finished out of the top nine in their Championship heat and ended the day somewhere around thirteenth. The team's rookie year at the Bulldog 100 was a very successful and exciting one.
New Boston ISD has 19 students from the Senior Class '08 that will benefit from the Rising Star Scholarship this year, according to Dr. Vandeaver, Superintendent. The Bulldog 100 and Rising Star is a worthy cause for the community and New Boston ISD is proud to be a part of it.
